Carolien Rieffe is a professor in the unit of Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University, the Netherlands. After Carolien received her PhD ('The Child’s Theory of Mind: Desires, Beliefs and Emotions') in 1998 at the Free University in Amsterdam, she had a tenured position at the University of London, UK, as an assistant professor, until she started in Leiden in 2004 as an associate professor.
In 2010 the NSDSK (Dutch Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child, Amsterdam) installed an endowed chair for Carolien at Leiden University, who now became professor by special appointment in social and emotional development for children with hearing and/or communicative impairments. Carolien is leading a research lab, which is focused on the role of the environment in the development of children’s emotional competence. The various projects that are running in this lab examine the effect of social learning on this development in various clinical groups, and in close collaboration with specialized field organizations, e.g. the NSDSK, the ENT department of the LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center), and the Center for Autism in Leiden.
