Ciao Henk Dekker, you will be missed

Retirement is a journey, not a destination…

Dear Henk,

You were an amazing role-model for many generations! We have learned so many things from you. You taught us about political cynicism: “The  individual’s attitude, consisting of a deep-rooted conviction of the inherent evilness of politicians and  political institutions.” You tried to explain Islamophobia to us, the general attitude of rejecting Muslims and all religious symbols and rituals that stem from the Islam. You educated us about nationalism, the sentiment based on common cultural characteristics that bind a population. You enlightened us about political socialization, the way people acquire political cognition, attitudes, and behaviors.

With your dedication and conscientiousness you inspired me, many students, and many colleagues. Our university has greatly benefitted  from your hard work, diligence, and kindness. Thank you for the support, guidance, and encouragement you have always given me. I will always remember your positivism, your vitality, and your energy.

I sincerely appreciate having had the chance to work with you. I wish you the best.

Some people say that retirement is a journey not a destination and I am confident that your journey will be a very joyful one…
